I have been on youtube almost 3 months but I have been a viewer for YEARS. There is a huge list of good YouTubers, Jenna Marbles (JennaMarbles), Philip Defranco (sxePhil & SourceFed), Epic Rap Battles of History, Ray William Johnson, Pewdiepie, ShayCarl (ShayTards), DanIsNotOnFire, Alfie (PointlessBlog), Boxxie and this list is endless. Here are some of my favourite YouTubers.

Philip DeFranco or “sxephil” is an American video blogger and YouTube celebrity. He is most notable for The Philip DeFranco Show, usually abbreviated PDS, a news show where DeFranco presents a news article, and then gives his opinion about it. His videos are centered on current events, sex, politics and celebrity gossip in which he gives his opinion, usually presented in an ironic manner and with frequent jump cuts to create a fast-paced feel. He has over 1 billion views, and over 2.5 million subscribers, and is the 79th most subscribed YouTuber as of July 2, 2013. DeFranco started his YouTube channel in 2006. His large audience led to his winning of a Spore Creature Creator contest and Wired’s Sexiest Geek of 2008 award, both open access online polls. DeFranco also created two other YouTube channels: PhilipDeFranco, a personal vlog-style channel and SourceFed, an original and Google funded YouTube channel. SourceFed spawned a spinoff channel, SourceFedNERD, as well. He sold all his channels to Revision3 in 2013.

As of July 24, 2013, his sxephil channel has earned 2.703 million subscribers and 1.12 billion video views, his PhilipDeFranco channel has earned 729,360 subscribers and 101 million views, and SourceFed has earned 1 million subscribers and 390 million video views – youtube.com/sxephil

Shay Carl has five YouTube channels, two of which (“shaycarl” and “SHAYTARDS”) have over one million subscribers. Butler and ApprenticeA are currently developing a documentary called “Vlogumentary” on a $200,000+ budget that was funded with an Indiegogo campaign and raised by mostly his viewers. Forbes called Butler one of the “most successful video entrepreneurs on YouTube” and in 2011 The New York Times featured Butler’s production company Maker Studios.

Butler frequently hosts and spices up events, such as the pre-show of the American Music Awards of 2012, and the largest bowl of pasta event at Buca di Beppo. – www.youtube.com/SHAYTARDS

Epic Rap Battles of History, officially shortened to ERB or ERBoH, is a YouTube video series created by Peter Shukoff (aka Nice Peter) and Lloyd Ahlquist (aka EpicLLOYD). The series pits famous historical and pop culture figures, either fictional or otherwise, against one another in a rap battle format.

Although early episodes of the series featured only Nice Peter and EpicLLOYD, later episodes have regularly featured guest appearances from other internet celebrities such as Lisa Donovan, Timothy DeLaGhetto, George Watsky, DeStorm Power, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Rhett and Link, Mike Diva, and Jenna Marbles. Rapper Snoop Dogg appeared as a special guest in the episode “Moses vs. Santa Claus”, as Moses. Epic Rap Battles of History has been housed on its own YouTube channel since December 2011.

On July 3, 2013, ERB’s “Barack Obama vs Mitt Romney” was certified as a gold single in the United States by the RIAA. – youtube.com/ERB

Ray William Johnson (born August 14, 1981) is an American video blogger, producer, and actor best known for his YouTube series Equals Three, in which he provides commentary on viral videos. Many of the videos featured on Equals Three are noted to have received an additional boost of popularity. In February 2011, one industry publication noted that Johnson currently had six of the top twenty most watched videos of the month. In early September 2012, Johnson had accumulated nearly 2 billion video views. As of September 2013, the RayWilliamJohnson YouTube channel has over 10 million subscribers, and over 2.4 billion video views – youtube.com/RayWilliamJohnson

Elysium is a 2013 American science fiction action-thriller film written, co-produced and directed by Neill Blomkamp and starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. It was released on August 9, 2013 in both conventional and IMAX Digital theaters. Elysium is a co-production of Media Rights Capital and TriStar Pictures.

The film takes place on both a ravaged Earth and a luxurious space habitat called Elysium. It explores political and sociological themes such as immigration, overpopulation, transhumanism, health care, and class issues

In 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a luxurious space station called Elysium and the poor, who live on an overpopulated, devastated Earth. While residents on Earth are policed by ruthless robots, Elysian citizens live in comfort and regularly use man-sized medical devices called Med-Bays to keep them free of disease.

Max Da Costa (Matt Damon), a former car thief and parolee, lives in the ruins of Los Angeles and works at an assembly line for the Armadyne Corp., the company that built Elysium. But an accident at the plant exposes Max to a lethal dose of radiation, giving him only days to live. Meanwhile, when a caravan of illegal immigrants from Earth attempts to reach Elysium, Elysian Secretary of Defense Jessica Delacourt (Jodie Foster) orders vicious mercenary Kruger (Sharlto Copley) to shoot down the shuttles. Disapproving of her methods, Elysian President Patel (Faran Tahir) reprimands her. Delacourt, vowing to protect Elysium and her own power, bargains with Armadyne’s CEO John Carlyle (William Fichtner) to write a program that can override Elysium’s central computer and make her President. Carlyle creates the program in his office on Earth and uploads it to his brain for safekeeping.

HORROR FILMS TOP 5 ft SCREAM, HELLRAISER, NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST, WES CRAVEN

SUBSCRIBE FREE – goo.gl/MJe2Tj & JOIN the Hairy Family. 4 Vlogs a week (MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY and 1 at WEEKENDs) FUNNY NEWS, MOVIE REVIEWs, FRIENDLY ADVICE and generally try to make you SMILE!

I have always been a horror film fan. I love being born in the 80’s. I was very lucky with the red hot horror genres and franchises with Childs Play (Chucky), Nightmare on Elm Street (Freddy Krueger), Friday The 13th (Jason Voorhees), Hellraiser (Pinhead), Evil Dead (Ash), Zombie movies like Dawn Of The Dead and of course the great minds of Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham. So I thought I would pull together a top 5 of my favourites.

Wes Craven’s Scream – Scream stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette. The first series entry, Scream, was released on December 20, 1996 and is currently the highest grossing slasher film in the United States. The second entry Scream 2 was released on December 12, 1997 followed by a third installment, Scream 3, released February 4, 2000. Eleven years after the previous film, Scream 4 was released on April 15, 2011. The films follow the character of Sidney Prescott (Campbell) who becomes the target of a succession of murderers who adopt the guise of Ghostface to stalk and torment their victims. Sidney receives support in the films from town deputy Dewey Riley (Arquette), reporter Gale Weathers (Cox), and film-geek Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy).

Hellraiser – Hellraiser franchise consists of nine films. The franchise is based on the novella The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker, who would go on to write and direct the adaptation of his story, titled Hellraiser. The films, as well as the comic book series, continually features the Cenobite Pinhead. The series’ storyline focuses on a puzzle box that opens a gateway to the Hell-like realm of the Cenobites, an order of formerly human monsters who harvest human souls to torture in sadomasochistic experiments. Although Clive Barker wrote the original story, as well as wrote and directed the first film, he has not written or directed any of the succeeding sequels.

Sean Cunningham’s Friday The 13th – Friday the 13th is an American horror franchise that comprises twelve slasher films, a television show, novels, comic books, and tie-in merchandise. The franchise mainly focuses on the fictional character Jason Voorhees, who drowned as a boy at Camp Crystal Lake due to the negligence of the camp staff. Decades later, the lake is rumored to be “cursed” and is the setting for a series of mass murders. Jason is featured in all of the films, as either the killer or the motivation for the killings. The original film was written by Victor Miller and was produced and directed by Sean S. Cunningham.

SAW – In 2003, Australian director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell created a short film to help pitch as a potential feature film. This was successfully done in 2004 with the release of the first installment at the Sundance Film Festival. It was released theatrically that October. The sequels were directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, David Hackl and Kevin Greutert, and were written by Wan, Whannell, Bousman, Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, and were released subsequently every October, on the Friday before Halloween, between 2004 and 2010. Both of the creators remained with the franchise as executive producers. On July 22, 2010, producer Mark Burg confirmed that the seventh film, Saw 3D, is the final installment of the series. Series creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are still open to continuing the series, however, if they can do something “different” with the material.

A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise consists of nine slasher films,. The franchise began with the film created by Wes Craven. The franchise is based on the fictional character Freddy Krueger, introduced in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), who stalks teenagers in their dreams and kills them. His motives were to seek revenge on their parents, who had burned him alive. The original film was written and directed by Craven, who returned to co-script the second sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), and to write and direct New Nightmare (1994). The films collectively grossed over $455 million at the box-office worldwide.

Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales sequel delayed #POTC #JackSparrow

The next Pirates of the Caribbean film has been delayed beyond its planned 2015 release.

Disney‘s Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which sees Johnny Depp returning for his fifth appearance as Captain Jack Sparrow, was expected to go into production next year.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer told the Hollywood Reporter issues with the script and budget caused the delay.

He said he was now targeting a summer 2016 release.

“We have an outline everyone loves but the script is not done,” Bruckheimer said, adding: “We want a script that everyone’s signed off on and a budget that everyone’s signed off on.”

The delay follows the poor performance by Disney’s much anticipated summer film The Lone Ranger, also starring Depp, which earned just $29m (£18m) in its opening weekend in the US.

The film, which reportedly cost $215m (£136m) to make, has grossed $243m (£154m) worldwide to date.

Disney warned the film would amount to losses of between $160m-$190m (£104m-£124m) after heavy spending on promotion failed to bring returns.

Bruckheimer said coming up with a great script was “always hard,” and after this summer – which saw several blockbuster films perform poorly – “everybody’s more cautious”.

The most recent Pirates instalments, At World’s End and On Stranger Tides, were both released in time for Memorial Day weekend in September 2007 and 2011.

Disney previously announced the fifth Pirates film will be directed by Kon-Tiki filmmakers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg.

The four films in the franchise have grossed a combined total of $3.7bn (£2.3bn) worldwide, making Pirates Of The Caribbean the fifth biggest film franchise ever.

Doctor Who – The Day of the Doctor: 50th Anniversary Update

The BBC has released an intriguing new image from the 50th anniversary special that features Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt. The image also shows two damaged Daleks and the words ‘Bad Wolf’ scrawled on what appears to be a wall… We’ll have to wait until the special premieres on 23 November to discover the full significance of these elements!

There’s also a press release that gives more details about the special – including its title: The Day of the Doctor. The press release in full reads:

50 YEARS OF DOCTOR WHO CULMINATING IN ‘THE DAY OF THE DOCTOR’

The countdown starts here as the BBC reveals its plans to take over TV and radio to mark the Doctor’s 50th anniversary

With special programmes planned across the BBC the celebrations will peak on 23 November with the anniversary episode, revealed as ‘The Day of the Doctor’.  Starring Matt Smith, David Tennant, Jenna Coleman with Billie Piper and John Hurt, the special for BBC One has been confirmed as feature length with 75 minutes of adventure.

Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor, said:

“The Day of the Doctor is nearly here!  Hope you all enjoy.  There’s lots more coming your way, as the countdown to the 50th begins now.”

Each channel will be home to unique content, celebrating the wealth of history and talent from the last 50 years.

BBC Two will broadcast a number of new commissions, focusing on telling the story behind the show.  For one night only, Professor Brian Cox will take an audience of celebrity guests and members of the public on a journey into the wonderful universe of the Doctor, from the lecture hall of the Royal Institution of Great Britain (1x60mins).  Drawing on the latest theories as well as 200 years of scientific discoveries and the genius of Einstein, Brian tries to answer the classic questions raised by the Doctor – can you really travel in time?  Does extra-terrestrial life exist in our galaxy?  And how do you build something as fantastical as the TARDIS?

In an hour-long special, BBC Two’s flagship arts programme The Culture Show presents ‘Me, You and Doctor Who’ (1x60mins), with lifelong fan Matthew Sweet exploring the cultural significance of the BBC’s longest running TV drama, arguing  that it’s one of the most important cultural artefacts of modern Britain.  Put simply, Doctor Who matters.  He’ll examine how the show has become a cultural force in its own right and tell the stories of some of the unsung cultural heroes, who pioneered its innovative music, design and storytelling.

BBC Two wraps up its coverage with the previously announced An Adventure in Space and Time(1x90mins), which will tell the story of the genesis of Doctor Who and the many personalities involved.  Written by Mark Gatiss the drama stars; David Bradley (the Harry Potter films); Brian Cox (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Identity), Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife) and Sacha Dhawan (History Boys, Last Tango in Halifax).

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, Doctor Who said:

“50 years has turned Doctor Who from a television show into a cultural landmark. Personally I can’t wait to see what it becomes after a hundred.”

BBC Four will introduce audiences to the first Doctor, William Hartnell, with a special re-run of the first ever story, which marked the start of 50 years of history. The four episodes are being shown in a restored format, not previously broadcast in the UK.

There will also be programmes across CBBC with 12 Again (1x30mins) bringing together CBBC’s super fan Chris Johnson, impressionist Jon Culshaw, Tommy Knight (Luke Smith), Warwick Davis (Porridge), Neve McIntosh (Madame Vastra), Dan Starkey (Strax) Louise Jameson (Leela) and the Seventh Doctor; Sylvester McCoy, to share their memories of watching TV’s top Time Lord when they were young.

While Blue Peter will launch an exciting new competition giving viewers aged between six and fourteen the opportunity to design a new gadget that will become part of the iconic science fiction series.  Two live Blue Peter specials will see presenters Barney, Lindsey and Radzi joined by aliens and monsters, with viewers challenging Matt Smith to answer their Doctor Who questions.

BBC Three will be home to several exciting entertainment commissions. Audiences will be encouraged to get involved and vote in ‘Doctor Who: Monsters and Villains Weekend’, as we countdown to the top Doctor Who monster.  For those less familiar with the show, ‘Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide’ will introduce fans and viewers to a wealth of archive material and act as a guide to all things Who.  A further exciting commission to be announced later this year will see the celebrations finish with a bang.

Danny Cohen, Director BBC Television said:

“Doctor Who is a titan of British television and I’m incredibly proud to have it on the BBC. It’s an astonishing achievement for a drama to reach its 50th Anniversary. I’d like to thank every person – on both sides of the camera – who has been involved with its creative journey over so many years.”

It’s not just TV where audiences will be able join in the celebrations, programming across Radio 2, Radio 1 and Radio 4 Extra will each mark the 50th.

BBC Radio 2 will ask ‘Who Is The Doctor?’ in a 90 minute documentary featuring newly recorded interviews and exclusive archive material. The programme will look at the lasting appeal of Doctor Who and ask how much of its continued success can be attributed to its basic formula.

In ‘The Blagger’s Guide to Doctor Who’, David Quantick will give the iconic Doctor the Blagger’s treatment. He’ll be finding out the answers to questions such as why do Americans think Tom Baker is still Doctor Who? How many Doctors have there really been? Were the Daleks really named after an encyclopaedia?

Finally, Graham Norton will be broadcasting his weekly Radio 2 show live (Saturday 23 November, 10am) from the Doctor Who Celebration in London.  In a special three-hour show, Graham will take a ride in the TARDIS and will also be chatting with some of the series’ stars and fans.

Music is a key part of Doctor Who, from the famous theme tune to soaring melodies, but the show has also inspired a whole new phenomenon – Time Lord Rock (TROCK).  Radio 1 will look at this genre of music inspired by the Doctor and his journeys through space and time with a 60 minute documentary.

Meanwhile Radio 4 Extra travels back to 1963 with a three hour special programme, ‘Who Made Who?’, to look at the world that inspired the television series.  Doctor Who may have come from other times, but his roots were very much in the present of 1960s Britain. This distinctive programme combines audio from the archive, new interviews and extracts from audio versions of Doctor Who.  Additionally, the station will broadcast readings and dramas featuring the great Doctor.

There will also be special content across the official website www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho and on the iPlayer.

Plastic banknotes could be ready for 2016 says Bank of England

The Bank of England could say goodbye to tatty tenners and frayed fivers by issuing plastic bank notes within the next three years.

It says polymer notes are cleaner, more secure and – because they last more than twice as long – are £10million a year cheaper than the cotton paper currently used.

The idea is just a proposal but if the plan goes ahead, new-style £5 and £10 notes  could start to replace paper currency for the first time in the Bank’s 300-year history.

The new notes would  probably also be smaller, in line with other countries, with the £10 reducing in size to become slightly larger than euro notes.

The Bank of England plans to ask the public what they think of the notes by showing them off at 50 events around the UK.

But focus groups have already raised concerns about the notes being slippery and possibly sticking together, and complained they will not fold as easily as paper.

Retailers, banks and the cash industry have also been asked for their views.

But a study by the Royal National Institute for the Blind found a 50/50 split on preference for paper or polymer, with most saying they could get used to the plastic.

Under the proposals, only the new-style £5 note featuring Winston Churchill and £10 note depicting Jane Austen will initially be printed on the synthetic material.

New Bank governor Mark Carney introduced plastic notes two years ago in Canada while in charge of its central bank.

A final decision will be announced in December this year.

Charlie Bean, deputy governor of the Bank, said: ‘Polymer banknotes are cleaner, more secure and more durable than paper notes. ‘They are also cheaper and more environmentally friendly.

‘However, the Bank of England would print notes on polymer only if we were persuaded that the public would continue to have confidence in, and be comfortable with, our notes.’

Polymer bank notes are made from a transparent plastic film, coated with an ink layer which enables them to carry printed design features. The Bank said they can also incorporate raised print.

More than 20 countries currently issue polymer bank notes, including Australia, which began printing them in 1988, as well as New Zealand, Mexico and Singapore.

Apple iPhone 5S details ‘leaked’ but iPhone 5C nowhere to be seen on eve of launch

Technical specifications for the rumoured iPhone 5S have supposedly been leaked online on the eve of its hotly-anticipated launch.

The unverified specs, obtained by Chinese website C Technology, show few differences between the impending handset and its existing version.

Apple is widely expected to reveal two new versions of its latest smartphone today, the 5S and the 5C, a budget offering likened to an iPhone mini.

Curiously, the 5C is nowhere to be seen on the ‘leaked’ configuration plan, which the Chinese site said it obtained from ‘news sources’.

It claims the 5S has battery life of 250, 25 more hours than the 5, and with an A7 processor that will run iOS 7.

The specs state the 5S comes with an f2.0 aperture camera with double flash and the ability for 1080p video recording.

How to make the perfect steak?

I love a good steak. I love mine Rare/Medium Rare with salt, pepper and herbs with chips, mushrooms and mustard. But how about the professionals give us some tips?

From Delicious Magazine

Jason Atherton, former executive chef of Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Grill, shares his secrets on how to cook the perfect sirloin steak to make it into a magnificent meal.

How to cook the perfect steak

When Jason Atherton was appointed by Gordon Ramsay to head up the kitchen at the ground-breaking restaurant Maze, he took the concept of tapas-style dining and elevated it to a whole new level.

This fast-rising foodie star opened Maze Grill, an eaterie modelled on the relaxed style of a New York bar and grill, where a wide range of different breeds and cuts of beef are cooked to perfection. So, who better than Jason Atherton to teach us how to cook the perfect steak.

how to cook steak

Five things to look for when buying a steak

1. When choosing a steak, sirloin is a fine choice due to its tasty, melt-in-the-mouth succulence. Good sirloin has just the right amount of fat and nice marbling. Rump steak is slightly cheaper than sirloin but it’s still a great steak for griddling or frying, with more flavour than sirloin. However, it does tend to be slightly chewier, especially if it has not been matured properly.

2. Age of the steak is important, as the hanging process develops the flavour and tenderises the meat. So ask your butcher how long the beef has been hung for. As a rule, 21 days as a minimum and 35 days as a maximum is a good range to go for.

3. Good beef should be a deep red colour, like the meat featured below.

4. Check the beef has good marbling – little streaks of fat running through the meat. This melts when heated, helping the steak to baste itself from within as it cooks.

5. A good layer of creamy-white fat around the top of sirloin steaks is essential.

how to cook steak

Five steps to cooking the perfect steak at home

1. Heat your griddle or frying pan over a high heat, until smoking hot.

2. Lightly brush the steak with a little olive oil and season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

3. Don’t griddle more than two steaks at a time, and keep them spaced well apart. If you add more than two steaks to the pan at once, the temperature will drop and the steak will stew, rather than fry.

4. Don’t turn the steaks until good seared markings are achieved, then turn them over and cook on the other side (see timings, below).

5. You must let the steak rest for about 3 minutes before serving, to allow the juices that have been drawn to the surface to relax back into the meat.

How long to cook a steak for

These timings are based on cooking a sirloin steak that’s about 2cm thick. (Cooking times will vary depending on the type and thickness of the steak, and how hot your pan is.)

Blue: 1 minute each side

Rare: 1½ minutes each side

Medium rare: 2 minutes each side

Medium: 2¼ minutes each side

Medium-well done: 2½ – 3 minutes each side.

  • Lego refused to sanction or endorse the toy, which was made by independent company Citizen Brick
  • Twitter users blasted £160 toy as an inappropriate plaything

Children can now build their own drug dens with a shocking new play kit inspired by TV show Breaking Bad.

The sell-out £160 kit, branded ‘SuperLab’, lets any child or adult recreate Walter White‘s notorious crystal meth lab.

Complete with protective masks, drug paraphernalia, figurines and a version of the car from the show, infants can even reenact scenes from the series.

The toy looks similar to a classic Lego set, although it is not connected to the Danish company in any way and was made by a separate firm.

Outraged commentators took to Twitter to speak out against the bizarre toy.

Jeff Myers tweeted: ‘Made for children raised by parents who should know better.’

Jacques Gonzales added: ‘Definitely not for kiddies!’

The drama, in its fifth and final series, follows chemistry teacher Walter White on his journey to raise money for his family’s future when he is diagnosed with lung cancer.

The schemer from Albuquerque, played by Bryan Cranston, enlists the help of a former pupil Jesse Pinkman, played by Aaron Paul.

A global hit, it is hailed by critics and watched by millions around the world.

But Lego Group refused to sanction the merchandise, produced by Citizen Brick, because of its ‘adult content’.

Beneath the sold-out item, the Citizen Brick website told customers: ‘Soothe yourself with the Citizen Brick Superlab Playset.

‘Who knows what fun you’ll cook up with this deluxe set, chock full of realistic details, and three exclusive minifigs! Over 500 parts!

‘This set is a product of Citizen Brick, and is not sponsored, authorized or endorsed by the LEGO Group, owners of the registered LEGO(R) trademark.’

Interest in the series is rife among under-age viewers, with one pair of children screening their own version on YouTube last month.

Rather than Class As, the Breaking Bad Jr stars deal in Jelly Beans, and the star suffers from diabetes instead of cancer.

Bacon and Cheesecake Officially as Addictive as COCAINE!

Scientists have finally confirmed what the rest of us have suspected for years: Bacon, cheesecake, and other delicious yet fattening foods may be addictive.

A new study in rats suggests that high-fat, high-calorie foods affect the brain in much the same way as cocaine and heroin. When rats consume these foods in great enough quantities, it leads to compulsive eating habits that resemble drug addiction, the study found.

This comes off the back of research that show some foods can actually GET RID OF BELLY FAT – www.healthambition.com/foods-get-rid-belly-fat/

Doing drugs such as cocaine and eating too much junk food both gradually overload the so-called pleasure centers in the brain, according to Paul J. Kenny, Ph.D., an associate professor of molecular therapeutics at the Scripps Research Institute, in Jupiter, Florida. Eventually the pleasure centers “crash,” and achieving the same pleasure–or even just feeling normal–requires increasing amounts of the drug or food, says Kenny, the lead author of the study.

“People know intuitively that there’s more to [overeating] than just willpower,” he says. “There’s a system in the brain that’s been turned on or over-activated, and that’s driving [overeating] at some subconscious level.”

In the study, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, Kenny and his co-author studied three groups of lab rats for 40 days. One of the groups was fed regular rat food. A second was fed bacon, sausage, cheesecake, frosting, and other fattening, high-calorie foods–but only for one hour each day. The third group was allowed to pig out on the unhealthy foods for up to 23 hours a day.

Not surprisingly, the rats that gorged themselves on the human food quickly became obese. But their brains also changed. By monitoring implanted brain electrodes, the researchers found that the rats in the third group gradually developed a tolerance to the pleasure the food gave them and had to eat more to experience a high.

They began to eat compulsively, to the point where they continued to do so in the face of pain. When the researchers applied an electric shock to the rats’ feet in the presence of the food, the rats in the first two groups were frightened away from eating. But the obese rats were not. “Their attention was solely focused on consuming food,” says Kenny.

In previous studies, rats have exhibited similar brain changes when given unlimited access to cocaine or heroin. And rats have similarly ignored punishment to continue consuming cocaine, the researchers note.

The fact that junk food could provoke this response isn’t entirely surprising, says Dr.Gene-Jack Wang, M.D., the chair of the medical department at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, in Upton, New York.

“We make our food very similar to cocaine now,” he says.

Coca leaves have been used since ancient times, he points out, but people learned to purify or alter cocaine to deliver it more efficiently to their brains (by injecting or smoking it, for instance). This made the drug more addictive.

According to Wang, food has evolved in a similar way. “We purify our food,” he says. “Our ancestors ate whole grains, but we’re eating white bread. American Indians ate corn; we eat corn syrup.”

The ingredients in purified modern food cause people to “eat unconsciously and unnecessarily,” and will also prompt an animal to “eat like a drug abuser [uses drugs],” says Wang.

The neurotransmitter dopamine appears to be responsible for the behavior of the overeating rats, according to the study. Dopamine is involved in the brain’s pleasure (or reward) centers, and it also plays a role in reinforcing behavior. “It tells the brain something has happened and you should learn from what just happened,” says Kenny.

Overeating caused the levels of a certain dopamine receptor in the brains of the obese rats to drop, the study found. In humans, low levels of the same receptors have been associated with drug addiction and obesity, and may be genetic, Kenny says.

However, that doesn’t mean that everyone born with lower dopamine receptor levels is destined to become an addict or to overeat. As Wang points out, environmental factors, and not just genes, are involved in both behaviors.

Wang also cautions that applying the results of animal studies to humans can be tricky. For instance, he says, in studies of weight-loss drugs, rats have lost as much as 30 percent of their weight, but humans on the same drug have lost less than 5 percent of their weight. “You can’t mimic completely human behavior, but [animal studies] can give you a clue about what can happen in humans,” Wang says.

Although he acknowledges that his research may not directly translate to humans, Kenny says the findings shed light on the brain mechanisms that drive overeating and could even lead to new treatments for obesity.

“If we could develop therapeutics for drug addiction, those same drugs may be good for obesity as well,” he says.

Alyssa Milano Sex Tape has “leaked” onto the interwebs this week. This sexy, hot, steamy …. JOKE …. has gone hugely viral. Alyssa Milano‘s account tweeted out yesterday that “My sex tape was leaked. Turns out it was much more than that–in fact, Milano had become entangled in a geopolitical crisis. But, happily, it was all part of a satirical effort on “Funny or Die” to educate the public a bit about the crisis Syria. Now if only she could get “Mistresses” to teach people about global warming. Watch the video here –

This time just in Syria after President Bashar al-Assad has been accused of useing Chemical Weapons and Chemical Weapon attacks against his own people. This week as seem a building of tensions within the collected nations looking to take further action.

The United States (USA) have stated that chemical weapon attacks can only have been from Bashar al-Assad’s government and troops and that it is a crime against international law and we need to tak action as the “red line” has been crossed. In the UN Security Council other country’s have started to pledge support and the UK Government Coalition have recalled Parliament to debate the require resolution to start direct action that must be “legal, direct and proportionate” ad all “future action must be refereed to the house” for debate.

So what do you think of the Syria situation? Should we intervene to stop chemical weapon attacks? Should we intervene to remove President Bashar al-Assad? Is a Syrian intervention out only option? Is this yet another war we don’t need to be dealing with?
