Napercise Sleeping Gym Class – Burn Calories While You Sleep

Ever feel like you should conform to society’s rules and get a gym membership – but you just really hate exercise? Well, there’s a new gym class in town which could be right up your street. David Lloyd gyms, which have branches across the UK, have introduced ‘Napercise’ classes where participants do nothing but sleep for an entire 45 minutes during the afternoon.

Sounds heavenly, right?

Guests who arrive in the studio won’t find any spin-bikes or treadmills – just a load of single beds. Forget the upbeat workout tunes. Instead there is atmospheric music to help you relax and catch some Zs.

Snoozing still burns calories, so you’re not technically cheating. And the studio temperature will also be dropped to a level that promotes calorie burning during sleep.

But what’s so good about sleeping? The classes have been scientifically designed to “reinvigorate the mind, improve moods and even burn the odd calorie,” according to the Birmingham Mail.

Napercise is inspired by past academic studies which stress the important health benefits napping in the day can bring – including boosting alertness, alleviating anxiety or stress and improving mood.

Exhausted parents and stressed-out professionals can be sure of an uninterrupted ’40 Winks Workout’.

Anyone who lives in the London area can catch the first Napercise taking place at David Lloyd Sidcup this weekend.

If that class is successful, it will roll out to other clubs around the UK.

Napercise has been developed alongside Dreams sleep expert Kathryn Pinkham, who says: “Sleep is a lot more important than people realise.

“In addition to a lack of sleep bringing with it a higher risk of developing anxiety or depression, when we are sleep deprived we lack the energy to exercise regularly, and also the mental clarity to make good decisions about the food we eat, which could negatively impact our physical health in the long-run.”

A spokesperson for David Lloyd Clubs said: “We’re always looking for new ways to tackle the issues that everyday families face, which is what Napercise sets out to do.

“Filling an exercise studio with beds might look unusual, but if it proves to be a success, we’re definitely excited at the possibility of rolling out the programme to more of our clubs down the line.”
