Gay bar bans glass after customers are injured in fetish room

A gay bar has banned glass from its bar after two customers were injured from glassings.

The Eagle Bar in Manchester has been banned from using glass containers after 11.30pm following reports of glassings at the back of the bar.

The pub will now have to follow a series of tough measures following a Manchester City Council hearing.

Security staff will have to monitor the back area, called the Black Eagle, a semi-dark room used for fetish nights.

From 11.30pm, all glassware must be removed from the bar area and a glass-collecter must be employed to ensure no glass is within reach of customers.

Any glass waste must be stored in a locked area, with no access to customers.

A licensing committee document reads: ‘Polycarbonate receptacles will be used for all drinks from 11.30pm hours. This will include the use of bottles, and all bottled drinks will be decanted into polycarbonate vessels.

It continued: ‘One SIA registered door staff member shall be on duty at the entrance to the ‘Black Eagle’ area of the premises from Midnight until the close of the premises.’

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: ‘There have been two separate incidents where people were glassed in Eagle Bar, so GMP took steps to make it safer by reviewing the licence conditions, which was successful so Eagle Bar is now restricted to serving drinks in plastic glasses. Eagle Bar are not being investigated for any crimes.’

A spokesman for The Eagle Bar told ‘The safety of the LGBT community and of all of our customers is of the upmost importance to the owners and team at Eagle Bar Manchester.

‘We will do whatever we need to in order to eradicate violence and hatred from our venue and are pleased to be working closely with Greater Manchester Police in order to successfully achieve this.’
